War Medals

Postby jacqui on Mon Jul 20, 2009 9:23 pm

Hi All. I've been detecting for 9 yrs now and have found many interesting things that i would never part with, but i have two items that i would dearly like to return to there owners families.I have two War Medals, and it does'nt feel right for me to have them.Im sure that when the soldiers in question recieved them they were very proud as were there families. The Medals both have the soldiers names and rank on them. Does anyone one have any idea were or how i would start to find the relatives/families. Jacqui

I trotted down to the local branch of the British Legion who were most interested and traced one owner who was about 90 but still had all his marbles, in another case the owner had died some years before but it went to the family. Which means I only have one left...sob, plus an unnamed silver medal from HMS Ganges.
I wonder if today the dreaded Data Protection Act might cause problems ?

Hi there I know the post is pretty old now but if you've had no joy in tracing the owner then try this it's a phone number for Army disclosures 0845 600 0663
they actually helped me trace my fathers military records and are an excellent service! This was a family matter though so I don't know for sure but give them a go! There's also the medals office in Gloucester who would of issued them in the first place! Hope this helps- good luck!

Kind regards
Matt

Rather than you asking the MOD, just hand it over to your local RBL Branch and they will do it for you, and keep you 'up to speed' on any developments. The RBL won't have any problems with too much 'redtape' and getting it to the correct family or individual.

The HMS Ganges was just a training depot for the navy at Harwich, opposite Parkeston Quay.
