Garrett Ace 150 vs 250

Postby photokey on Thu Jan 21, 2010 7:59 pm

I understand the extras on the 250 over the 150 but is it worth paying approx £60 for them as I'm a complete beginner. Or would I be better sticking with the 150. Are there any alternatives to the Garrett - maybe deeper finds would need a better detector?? Would be using mainly fields/gardens. Thanks in advance

Hi i pondered the very same thing before i went for the ace150.
I believe the electronics are the same so the only bonus you get is the pinpoint option.
The extra buttons look like they complicate things.

I use my 150 on jewelery mode at level 3. Dig everything

£2 Coins Bell Tone
£1 Coins Bell Tone
50p Ptab Medium Tone
20p Ptab Medium Tone
10p Nickel / Ptab Medium Tone
5p Nickel Medium Tone
2p Coins Bell Tone
1p Coins Bell Tone

I also bought the garrett probe. Which together is dearer than the 250 but i feel you benefit more from the two pieces of kit
I have had the 150 since xmas and have found 300 modern coins at a value of £70

You get used to the pinpointing on the ace150 and then finding the item is simple with the probe in the plug/soil/sand/bark

At the beginning i was digging only when it showed coins which gave me loads of £1/£2/1p/2p but then i went to digging all signals on jewellery and got loads of
5p on nickel and 10/20/50p from pulltab/rings

Brilliant machine

Hey guys,

Thanks for the replies. Have you found anything other than newish coins??

Our house was built in the 60's but previously was allotments and before that part of church land so hoping there maybe something interesting in the back garden/paddock. We tend to keep it quite rough - more like a paddock than a garden

I average around 7000 coins a year and two rings a week though admittedly not all gold ones from four days detecting (five, when the weather is better).
Always have a detector in the car and have only had two none detecting holidays (Egypt) in 26 years since I went full time.

Does anyone else think 10 coins in a day is a high number ?

It seems like certain people don't believe the 150 is great at finding modern coins

I have been spending the coins at tesco self service checkouts as i have been finding them.
So can't show any pics

I can assure you i am telling the truth and was out this morning and came back with £14.00 and 63 coins

So it continues to perform brilliantly

do what I did and buy a secondhand 250 for the price (if not cheaper) than a new 150.. if you get the 150 you'll only want pinpointing and custom modes later on and wished you had got the 250! also people are paying ridiculous amounts for secondhand 250's.. probably because there is high demand for them (says something). I saw one go for £140ish on ebay a few weeks back. You can get them for £160 new! secondhand 150's go for around £80ish. I got my 250 for £120.. Deffo worth the extra £40 in my eyes.. :mrgreen:
Sovereign XS-2A. BBS 1000 Coil. Sunray probe. Straight shaft conversion.
Since Feb 2010..
Cash = £140.55 Total coins = 676. Oldest = 1775ish George III Penny
Rings = 3x 9ct Gold, 3x Silver, 1x Tungsten, 1x Stainless..(and loads of junk)
